Important Announcement: Regarding Visits & Volunteering

We are truly grateful for the overwhelming interest in visiting and volunteering at our shelter in Sri Lanka. Your eagerness to support our cause means the world to us. However, we want to ensure the safety and well-being of the women and children under our care remain our top priority.

While we deeply appreciate every offer of assistance, we regret to inform you that external volunteer assignments are not available at this moment. Our dedicated local professionals are tirelessly working to support the recovery of shelter seekers. Please note that we are unable to accept volunteers who do not speak Sinhala or Tamil. Understanding and communicating in the local languages are crucial for providing effective support and care to those in our shelter.

For those still eager to get involved, you can support us through fundraising campaigns or financial donations. Your solidarity and generosity play a significant role in improving the lives of women and children in our shelter.

Additionally, if you find yourself in Sri Lanka, we invite you to join our cooking class in Matara. Your participation in these activities not only enriches your experience but also supports our cause.

Thank you for your understanding and unwavering support. Together, we can make a difference.

About us

The Sambol Foundation was founded in 2018 by Devika and Luca Salomon.
In 2017, after a long period of planning, they decided to tear down their tents in Zurich and put all their energy, together with their then 3-year-old daughter, into setting up the foundation on site. The structure and foundations were laid very precisely over 3 years together with the manager Inoka Gamage. Since 2021, they have spent 5-6 months a year in Sri Lanka to support the foundation's work on the ground.

The foundation enables people to help themselves. The shelters, trauma therapies, medical and legal assistance and support in everyday life provide initial stabilisation. After therapeutic and legal support, a follow-up solution is worked out, the children are educated and the women are integrated into the primary labour market so that a self-determined life is possible.

The name of the foundation comes from an addition to the Sri Lankan curry. A "sambol" is served as an extra with a curry to add colour and extra flavour. This should also apply to the foundation in a figurative sense.
